A Grantham-based company has won an award for developing a unique process that re-uses previously wasted material.
L-R Sean Fenney and Graeme Parkin, from EnvironCom, awards host BBC Countryfile's Julia Bradbury and Paul Carley, of Finning Komptech, who presented the Recycling Performance of the Year award
EnvironCom, specialising in recycling waste electrical and electronic items (WEEE), scooped the 'Recycling Performance of the Year' title at the annual Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) Awards for Environmental Excellence.
It celebrates EnvironCom's method of purifying PUR Foam, the insulation found in fridges.
The company receives around half a million fridges for recycling each year and has traditionally had to either incinerate the PUR Foam or send it to landfill.
But since the implementation of the purification process it has been able to divert 2,400 tonnes of the material and increased its fridge recycling rate from 88% to 99%.
The development of the technique involved a year of research and development with specialists in Europe and the USA.
The company has shared its method with competitors and, in doing so, it has enabled a further 2,800 tonnes of foam to avoid being sent to landfill sites.
The foam is now modified so that it can be used by a partner company that specialises in the manufacture of wood-based laminate products.
Graeme Parkin, Group Commercial Director of EnvrionCom said: "As a company our main target is to do the right thing.
"We want to work with other companies, even if they are competitors, to ensure we are making positive strides within the waste industry.
"We are very proud that our efforts have been recognised by CIWM, and as a company are looking forward to an exciting future working in both the UK and Europe."
CIWM is the leading professional body for the waste management sector representing over 7,000 individuals in the UK and overseas. It is a non profit-making organisation, dedicated to the promotion of professional competence amongst waste managers.
